Dropping any rubbish anywhere is an offence. It might be sweet wrappers, cigarette butts or even chewing gum. Not enough litter bins is no excuse. You should hang on to your litter until you can dispose of it properly. Otherwise you could end up in court and it could cost you a lot of money. Instead of a court appearance Police Officers, Community Officers, and Council Wardens can also give you a Fixed Penalty Notice for littering which you must pay. If you dont you could end up paying an even bigger fine in court.
Dumping rubbish from a vehicle is also a criminal offence, even sweet wrappers and fast food containers. Old furniture and general household rubbish left at the side of the road is bad enough, but things like hazardous chemicals and builders waste are increasingly being illegally dumped.
As important as the legal consequences of dropping litter and dumping waste, are its effects on the environment. General litter dropped by pedestrians and thrown out of car windows makes our neighbourhoods look a tip, which makes people of all ages feel unsafe and insecure. The more litter there is around our streets the more people are likely to throw their litter around as well. More dangerous or hazardous waste can also pollute our air and water.
