There are nearly 3000 police officers in Essex alone. These include uniformed and plain clothes officers and those who carry out special duties things like dog handlers and traffic officers.
When youre out youre most likely to come across officers on patrol, they could be officers responding to a call for help or they might be members of the Community Policing Team on their beat.
In many areas you will also come across Police Community Support Officers, or PCSOs. These are police staff, in uniform, who patrol town and residential areas. They are not police officers, but they are there to provide assistance and help. They can call for back up or police assistance if they need it. Youll recognise them from their uniform their hat has a plain blue band and their jackets say Police Community Support Officer on the back.
All police officers and PCSOs have a number which is unique to them. If you have any dealings with them they will give you their number so you know who you dealt with.
Youll also see police cars and other vehicles on the streets. There are different types of cars depending on the sort of job they do - the main ones are response cars, uniform cars and traffic cars. Response cars are the ones mainly used to respond to emergency incidents and uniform cars are used for more general patrol duties.
Youll also come across police officers in your school.
