There are many causes of truancy ranging from not liking a particular lesson, to general boredom and disaffection, going on holiday, or even going shopping. Some people truant to escape bullying. Whilst truanting, young people are highly likely to become victims of crime. Some truants are committing crime. Unfortunately truants, after reaching school-leaving age, are more likely to be out of work, homeless and three times more likely to be victims of crime, or offend than non-truants. Home Office Research found that 75% of boys and 50% of girls who truant just once a week have already committed offences. Truancy has costly effects to the police, courts, prisons and victims of crime.
In Essex the police work closely with the Education Welfare Service to combat truancy. Some parents have been prosecuted for allowing their children to miss school and some have been fined by being issued with a penalty notice. Schooling is an extremely valuable part of life and the costs of missing school are high.
