One of your most basic human rights is the right to feel safe when youre out and about, at home, at school and at play. But YOU have to be responsible for your safety. Other people will help you and thats because they care about you.
You might love to watch a scary film or go on the biggest ride at a theme park but thats a choice, its not fun to feel scared when its not your choice. Make sure you know what to do if you find yourself in a scary situation that is not by choice. How about: telephone your parents or carers and ask them to come and get you, stay with friends rather than walk on your own or stay in well-lit areas near other people.
If youre travelling on your own or with mates, make sure any transport you take is official. Dont be tempted to get in a car even if the driver says its a minicab. Always book a taxi through a recognised company and give them a name so you know the right person is picking you up.
Phones are great for calling for help, but you need to make sure your mobile is safe. Dont carry it about where it can be seen or leave it unattended. Find out how to cancel your phone if it is lost or stolen and if someone does try and steal it, let it go you are more important than the phone.
If you dont want people to know youre calling someone, then why not text them? Teach your mum or dad how to receive texts and then youll be able to let them know where you are at any time. But make sure your mobile is always charged up and has enough credit on it.
TRUST YOUR OWN FEELINGS. If you feel threatened or scared, do something. If youre not sure about something, speak to someone you trust.
