Once you have been arrested and taken to custody you will be questioned in an interview room. This is a private room which usually just contains a desk and chairs and a tape recorder. However if you are 17 or under , sometimes the desk is taken away and the interviewing police officer, you and an appropriate adult will just sit on chairs.
Victims and witnesses to crimes are also interviewed as part of the investigation. However, these interviews are more likely to take place either at your home, or in a different interview room somewhere else in the police station. Some victims and witnesses may be interviewed in special sympathy suites, depending on the sort of crime.
If you are searched, interviewed, involved in an ID parade or charged an appropriate adult must be present. This might be a parent, carer or friend of yours, but if they are not available the police will call for someone else to attend this could be someone from another agency or organisation. They are there to provide support to you while in custody, ensure your rights are protected and help communication between you and the police.
