Legal drugs
Some drugs that are not banned by law are some of the most popular. However there are still rules and laws that apply to them:
Cigarettes
It is illegal for a shopkeeper to sell cigarettes and other tobacco products to young people they know to be under 18 years old.
Solvents
It is illegal for a shopkeeper to sell glue, lighter fuel, aerosols and other things that young people sometimes sniff, to people they know to be under 18 years old.
Alcohol
It is illegal for shops, pubs and clubs to sell alcohol to those under 18 years old. The police can now take alcohol away from anyone under 18 in a public place - like in the street or the park.
Illegal drugs
Drugs that are banned by law are called 'controlled' or illegal' drugs.
These include speed, cannabis, crack, ecstasy, heroin and LSD.
